Basic Steps of the LANAP® Protocol

Steps of the LANAP® Protocol

Dr. Randy J. Greenberg offers the FDA cleared Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP®), providing treatment of gum disease in Wallingford. LANAP® is used to treat patients who have moderate to advanced levels of gum disease. This convenient laser periodontal therapy removes diseased tissue and bacteria by vaporization, and eliminates the need for scalpels and sutures. Healthy tissue remains undisturbed and healing of the treated areas occurs more quickly compared with traditional periodontal surgery.

Laser Periodontal Therapy – About the Procedure

Before execution of this revolutionary laser gum treatment, patients are evaluated with x-rays, periodontal measuring tools to evaluate the depths of the periodontal pockets, and charts to determine the severity of the disease. Early stages of periodontal disease could possibly be amended with a non-surgical treatment, while moderate to severe cases will require more extensive treatment.

Unlike traditional treatments, LANAP® requires no scalpels, sutures, or removal of healthy tissue. Instead, the procedure is executed with the PerioLase® MVP-7™, a fiber optic laser that is equal to about three human hairs. This laser accomplishes treatment of this condition by vaporizing the diseased tissue and bacteria, leaving healthy tissue structure in place. Tartar deposits detected on the root surfaces are removed with the use of ultrasonic scaling instruments. To complete the laser periodontal therapy, the PerioLase® MVP-7™ is placed on a setting that creates blood clotting around the treated areas to promote the healing process.

Once this has occurred, the gum tissues are gently compressed against the surfaces of the teeth, so that sutures are not required, resulting in minimal post-operative discomfort and less recovery time. The bite is evaluated, especially in areas where significant bone loss has occurred, and adjustments are made as necessary.

Gum disease, in any stage, should never go untreated. To learn more about laser periodontal therapy and the treatment of gum disease in Wallingford, contact the office of Dr. Greenberg today.
